Bioactive Ingredients Research

This TIMed CENTER Core Facility wants to establish herbal substances as an alternative to conventional drugs.

In modern medicine and in the field of nutrition, phytamines become more and more relevant. These are natural essences and herbal substances with a measurable biological effect which are used in the prevention and treatment of diseases. The TIMed CENTER Core Facility “Active Ingredients Research” is aware of their potential. Thus, the studies conducted at the faculty Wels of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria are aimed at establishing phytamines as an alternative to conventional drugs in the future.

In this context, it is necessary to know and to describe basic molecular effect mechanisms. For that purpose, phytamines are not only identified and characterized in this Core Facility, but also analyzed regarding their physiological effects in adequate in-vitro- and in-vivo-testing systems. The influence of plant components and their ingredients are investigated on a biophysical, biochemical, molecular- and cell-biological level.

The service spectrum of this Core Facility ranges from basic research and the development of functional food to the creation of highly effective natural pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. In detail, the researchers are concerned with thematic areas like the modification of food or the investigation of ingredients found in cosmetics. Other fields of interest are studies about active ingredients and unknown interactions in the food sector as well as food quality assurance by means of different measurement methods.
